Trolltunga in July 2022: Why the Two-Day Approach Beats the Day Hike

My second visit to Norway's most famous ledge, this time sharing the adventure with my wife. Rain, fog, and why sometimes the journey matters more than the destination.

Trolltunga in July 2022: Why the Two-Day Approach Beats the Day Hike

July 2022 marked my second pilgrimage to Trolltunga, Norway's most photographed rock formation. But this time was different – I was sharing this incredible adventure with my wife, introducing her to the hiking game while revisiting one of my favorite places on Earth.

The Choice: One Day or Two?

Here's what most people don't realize about Trolltunga: you absolutely can do it in one day. There's a shuttle service – essentially a mini bus – that takes you quite far up the mountain, skipping the boring initial part of the hike. From the shuttle drop-off, it's about a 6-hour round trip to the famous ledge.

But here's why I choose the two-day approach every time: the adventure isn't just about reaching the destination.

    The Two-Day Magic

Starting from the car park and hiking the full route allows you to truly immerse yourself in the Norwegian wilderness. About 80% of the way to Trolltunga, you'll find perfect camping spots where you can pitch your tent surrounded by absolutely beautiful nature.

The evening hours at camp are pure magic. As the day hikers head back down, you're settling in for the night, watching the landscape transform in the golden hour light. There's something special about earning your sleep in the mountains.

    The Morning Reward

Here's the real payoff: waking up early and completing that final stretch to Trolltunga means you get the entire ledge to yourself. No crowds, no waiting for photos, just you and one of the most spectacular views in the world. It's an absolutely incredible feeling.

My first time, I experienced this magic with two friends. We loved it so much that I knew I had to share it with my wife.

    Weather Happens

Norway has its own plans sometimes. When we visited in July 2022, we were greeted by rain and fog instead of the crystal-clear views I'd hoped to share. The famous ledge was shrouded in mist, and the dramatic fjord views were replaced by an ethereal, almost mystical atmosphere.

Was it disappointing? Sure, a little. But was it still an incredible experience? Absolutely. Sometimes the mountains teach you that the journey and the company matter more than the perfect Instagram shot.

Getting Her Into the Hiking Game

Despite the weather, this trip was successful in a different way. Watching my wife embrace the challenge, push through the rain, and discover her own strength on the trail was better than any view. She caught the hiking bug, and that's a victory that lasts way beyond any single adventure.

The two-day approach also made it more manageable for someone new to serious hiking. Breaking up the challenge, having time to rest and enjoy the journey, and not feeling rushed – these elements made the experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.

    Why I Recommend It

Whether you choose the one-day shuttle approach or the two-day adventure, Trolltunga is absolutely worth it. But if you have the time and gear, I strongly recommend the two-day approach:

    • You'll have the ledge to yourself in the morning
    • The camping experience in Norwegian wilderness is unforgettable
    • It's more manageable for less experienced hikers
    • You actually get to enjoy the journey, not just rush to the destination
    • Bad weather becomes part of the adventure, not a trip-ruiner

    Final Thoughts

Trolltunga in July 2022 reminded me why I fell in love with Norwegian hiking in the first place. Yes, the weather wasn't perfect, but we still created incredible memories. My wife discovered her love for hiking, and I got to revisit one of my favorite places on Earth.

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that don't go according to plan. The rain, the fog, the challenges – they all become part of the story you'll tell for years to come.

If you're considering Trolltunga, don't wait for the perfect conditions. Just go. The mountains will teach you everything you need to know.
